This is the time of year when there’s a real lull in the phone (and in fact, devices in general) market. Not much is being released or even announced as of late. So here at Your Phone Sucks we’re going to take some time to answer a reader’s question, one that probably many of you have asked yourself:

“What is the difference between 4G and 3G? My phone has the option to turn my 4G off, and it is off most of the time. When should I turn the 4G on?”

This is a rather loaded question. Let’s start with the short answer.

With the Consumer Electronics Show but a distant memory, it’s time to take another look at the current landscape of smartphones. Now’s an excellent time to shop for a new phone, for a variety of reasons:

1) We are at least several months away from the iPhone 5, or whatever it ends up being called.

2) Most of the major new phones were already announced this month, and the’re availability will trickle into reality over the next couple of weeks.

3) Obviously, there are no back-to-school or Christmas deals just around the corner.

4) And finally, Samsung has formally stated that they won’t be announcing the Galaxy S 3 — an update the Galaxy S 2 (the most popular Android phone of all time) — until March at the earliest.

In other words, these smartphones are all a safe bet. Per usual, I’m grouping everyone into a few distinct personality groups.

Wow, phones really advance quickly, don’t they? It’s been just over a month since we last discussed which phones should replace your CrapTaculStar 9200 (and let’s be honest, you wouldn’t be reading this unless it were true), yet so much has changed! As before, I’ll try to keep it simple and break it down by who your phone-self is (rather than simply what carrier you are currently on).

Oh, and one caveat: I’m leaving the actual work of finding/looking at details/buying these phones up to you. I would recommend searching for these devices on Phone Arena before making any decisions.

It seems like we’re always expanding here at By That You Mean, and today’s no different. And by “expanding” I of course mean flooding your Facebook wall with crap you don’t care about.

But I digress!

The impetus for this new section is the simple fact that your phone sucks. No really, it does. Look at that piece of crap.

At least that’s what I can say based on the vast anecdotal evidence of weekly being asked what phone one should get. It’s not as simple as saying this is the best phone, of course, so I’ll break it down here into the categories of phone users, with updates coming hopefully every month. Which one are you?
